What Is a Vector File?

Vector Files vs. Raster Images: What's the Difference?

The easiest way to understand the difference is:

Vector = shapes and paths
Raster = pixels

Files such as JPG and PNG are normally raster images. They contain a fixed number of pixels.

If a small raster logo is enlarged significantly, those pixels can become visible and the artwork may look blurry or pixelated.

Vector formats such as AI, EPS and SVG can contain true vector artwork that can be resized without the same pixelation problem.

Simple Example

Imagine you have a 300-pixel-wide JPG logo.

It may look perfectly fine on a website. But if a sign company needs to enlarge that same logo several feet wide, there may not be enough image information to produce a sharp result.

SVG stands for Scalable Vector Graphics.

Is a PDF a vector file?

A PDF can contain vector artwork, raster images, text, or a combination of them.

This is important because simply saving a blurry JPG inside a PDF does not turn the JPG into vector artwork.

A PDF supplied from professionally created vector artwork can preserve vector information and is widely used for sharing and production.

What is a DXF file?

DXF is a format commonly used to exchange drawing and path information between compatible design, CAD, cutting, fabrication, and manufacturing systems.

For our customers, DXF is most commonly requested when artwork needs to move beyond normal printing into cutting or fabrication workflows.

What are DXF files used for?

Depending on the machine and workflow, DXF may be requested for:

Do I need DXF for normal printing?

Usually not.

If you're simply printing a logo on business cards, brochures, or apparel, your production provider may prefer formats such as AI, EPS, PDF, or SVG instead.

DXF becomes more relevant when a machine or fabrication workflow specifically requires it.

CDR File — CorelDRAW

What is a CDR file?

CDR is the native file format associated with CorelDRAW.

Some print shops, sign companies, engravers, and production businesses use CorelDRAW as part of their normal workflow and may specifically request CDR artwork.

When do I need a CDR file?

Request CDR if your designer, printer, sign shop, or production provider specifically works with CorelDRAW or asks for a .cdr file.

If nobody has requested CDR, you may not need it.

PNG File

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a raster image format rather than a true vector format.

It is especially useful when you need a high-quality digital image with a transparent background.

What is PNG commonly used for?

PNG files are useful for:

Can I enlarge a PNG indefinitely?

No.

A PNG is pixel-based. Even a high-resolution PNG has a fixed pixel size and can eventually lose quality if enlarged beyond what its resolution supports.

For unlimited scalable logo artwork, retain the vector master files as well.

JPG / JPEG File

What is a JPG file?

JPG is one of the most common raster image formats.

It's convenient for viewing, emailing, uploading, websites, photographs, and previews, but it is not a true vector format.

Why did my printer reject my JPG logo?

A printer doesn't necessarily reject a file simply because it's a JPG. A sufficiently high-resolution JPG may work for some printing applications.

Problems occur when the available JPG is too small, blurry, compressed, pixelated, or unsuitable for the required production size.

In those cases, the printer may request a vector version.

Can you convert my JPG logo into vector?

EMB File — Editable Embroidery File

What is an EMB file?

EMB is an embroidery production format used within compatible embroidery workflows.

Unlike a normal graphic vector file, embroidery artwork contains information related to how a design will be stitched.

What is an EMB file useful for?

An EMB file can be useful when an embroidery professional needs greater control over the embroidery design for adjustments and production preparation.

It should not be confused with AI, EPS, or SVG artwork.

DST File — Embroidery Machine File

What is a DST file?

DST is a widely used embroidery machine stitch format.

Rather than simply describing graphic shapes like a normal vector file, a DST contains stitch-related information used by compatible embroidery equipment.

Is DST the same as a vector file?

No.

This is a common source of confusion.

AI/EPS/SVG = graphic vector artwork
DST = embroidery stitch/machine data

A clean vector logo can be useful when preparing an embroidery design, but converting artwork into embroidery involves additional production considerations beyond ordinary vector tracing.

Which File Format Do I Need?

What If My Printer Asks for a “Vector File”?

Don't worry if they don't specify a particular format.

A File Extension Doesn't Guarantee a True Vector

This is one of the most important things to understand about vector files.

Changing:

logo.jpg → logo.eps

doesn't convert the artwork into vector.

Similarly, placing a JPG inside an AI, EPS, SVG, or PDF file does not automatically recreate the image as true vector artwork.

Professional vector conversion requires the artwork itself to contain properly constructed vector elements.

What is the best vector file format for a logo?

There isn't one format that's best for every situation.

For long-term logo ownership, having an editable professional source format such as AI along with widely usable formats such as EPS, SVG, and vector PDF provides flexibility for different applications.

Is SVG better than PNG?

They serve different purposes.

SVG can contain scalable vector artwork, while PNG is a raster image format and supports transparent backgrounds.

For a website logo, either may be appropriate depending on the website and artwork. For professional editing or production, retaining the original vector files is important.

Is EPS better than PDF?

Neither is universally better.

EPS remains useful in many established vector and production workflows, while PDF is convenient for sharing, viewing, printing, and modern production workflows.

Use the format requested by your production provider.

Is PDF always a vector file?

No. A PDF can contain vector artwork, raster images, or both. A JPG placed inside a PDF remains raster artwork.

Is SVG always a vector file?

SVG is a vector-capable format, but the file's quality and structure still depend on how the artwork was created.

Simply receiving an SVG extension doesn't necessarily mean the artwork has been professionally reconstructed.

Do I need every vector file format?

Usually, no.

Different formats exist because different software and production systems have different requirements.

Can you provide multiple file formats?
